Description
An earlier photograph of this plant was, apparently, the budding stage. While there were ragged remnants of the flower petals clinging to the "pods", I was unable to discern what color they had been. Cephalanthus occidentalis is a species of flowering plant in the family Rubiaceae, that is native to eastern and southern North America. Common names include buttonbush, common buttonbush, button-willow and honey-bells. Waterfowl and shorebirds consume the seeds of common buttonbush. White-tailed deer browse foliage in the northeastern United States. Wood ducks use the plant's structure for protection of brooding nests. Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds are attracted to common buttonbush for its nectar.
